Visit the beautiful Greek island of Heraklion
The modern city of Heraklion is the capital of Crete, the economic centre of the island and has a bustling atmosphere to match. Ancient Byzantine churches appear against a modern cityscape in this city of contrasts, while its pavement cafes and elegant boutiques lend Heraklion its cosmopolitan air. However, if you're prepared to lose yourself in the back streets, you'll get a glimpse of a slower, more traditional way of life.

The capital city of Crete Heraklion, has plenty of buildings and artifacts that are thousands of years old, but the area has been given a modern makeover in recent years that has made it a wildly popular vacation destination. The excellent museums and cultural festivals, wonderful dining options, and easy access to several of the other Aegean Islands mean that there's something for everyone here.

Visit the grand architecture and vast beaches of Karteros, the strip of museums and art attractions along Xanthoudidou Street, or watch the beautiful sunsets from the harbor.

You can use public city bus network to travel around Heraklion but you have to figure out the line to your destination. There are usually no routes or schedules posted at the bus stops.

Enjoy your time in the center of Heraklion. Walk along the wonderful roman streets and take a break at Liberty Square that is full of cafes, restaurants and many shops and jewellery stores.

Heraklion's Archaeological Museum houses the remains of the 3000-year old Minoan civilization, which grew around the nearby legendary palace of Knossos (of Minotaur fame), as well as Byzantine churches and a well-preserved Venetian wall and fortress dating from the 15th century.
